I think the reason that Ron/Hermione angle was so downplayed 
was because Harry spent most of the book brooding alone and 
lashing out at everyone. A lot of heavy emotional stuff went on for 
Harry and I think he wouldn't care to notice anything between 
Hermione and Ron - He barely payed attention to his own date.
