Laura:

No, entailments were used here in the States as well (if you've ever 
read "To Kill A Mockingbird" you may recall a reference to one.)  And 
women couldn't own or inherit property in their own names in Britain 
until the Married Women's Property Act was passed, in the mid to late 
19th century IIRC.  Which makes me wonder if a male-only entailment 
would even be valid under contemporary British civil law.  If it has 
to stay in the family, I hope Grimmauld Place goes to Tonks!
