I have just tried to follow this thread and turned up another 
interesting sideline.

POA p.184 "The Patronus". MaGonagall talking to Harry as she gives 
back the Firebolt...

"And Potter - /do/ try and win, won't you? Or we'll be out of the 
running for the eighth year in a row, as Professor Snape was kind 
enough to remind me only last night...."

How does that square with our other information?
