Actually, I teach literature at a university in Southern California and
require my students, the majority of whom will become elementary school
teachers, to read the first book in the series. Although I assign the book
because the class deals with issues of classroom censorship, and the HP
books fall under heavy censure in many areas of the US, I also manage to
work in a discussion of the ways in which Harry fits the model of an epic
hero and follows Joseph Campbell's heroic quest.
