Dumbledore has claimed to have watched Harry "closer than he 
realizes" during his years at Hogwarts.  The best explanation to how 
he knows so much is that he was there when the incidents happened.  I 
personally favor the idea that Dumbledore is (yet another) 
unregistered animagus.  I think he's the wasp we see during Harry's 
transfiguration OWL.
