Mags~~I dont know if this helps but i once read a short story 
called "Flowers for Algernon." anyone read it? Algernon was a mouse 
who's i.q. was raised traumatically from these test pills and once he 
hit the "peak" of his intelligence, his mind slowly deteriorated 
until his death. I just thought i'd put that in there.
oh and i took the whole Crouch saying "Augustus Rookwood?" as meaning 
there might be another person b/c if Karkaroff had just said 
Rookwood,wouldn't he have known exactly who it was?
