That suggests that it was a mistake.  Assume the UK publisher gets the 
manuscript first, but their editors don't catch the mistake.  Then the 
US publisher gets it, and their editors do catch the mistake.  By then 
it might be too late for the UK publisher to fix it, so the mistake 
appears in print.
