Now Me: The only problem with linlou's analysis is that (s)he is 
using Merriam-Webster as the source. As JKR is British, Oxford 
English would be the dictionary of choice (and there are 
differences), in preference the Complete OED.
Otherwise, the analysis brings up good points.
