While IIRC several people have suggested that Tonks fits some
(contemporary) lesbian stereotype or other, she is not the first
character to do so. When we met Professor Grubbly-Plank as substitute
CoMC teacher in GoF: "an elderly witch with closely cropped grey hair
and a very prominent chin" she "barks" at them and speaks "briskly"
and "shortly", she teaches Unicorns and says: "Boys keep back! Girls
to the front," and I was *sure* that JKR had inserted a not very
affectionate parody of a political lesbian. (Do the under-40s know
what a 'political lesbian' is? My short and biased explanation: a
woman who CHOSE to be a lesbian because of an ideological belief that
all men are evil and almost all women are good.) I was very relieved
that Professor Grubbly-Plank is portrayed much nicer in OoP.
