I've read posts on this list that so assume, but I've never 
understood where they got that idea.

Lockhart may have been amoral rather than evil in his normal career 
of selfishly Obliviating people who otherwise could have gone on 
rescuing wizarding folk from monsters, but he was clearly EVIL when 
he meant to Obliviate Harry and Ron into insanity just in order to 
leave poor Ginny to die. Merely amoral would have been to just run 
away, to save his own skin, but not prevent others from trying to 
save her.
