Actually, I can do better for you :)  It is canon that Riddle was in 
Slytherin. In SS/PS in ch 5 when Harry and Hagrid are talking after Harry met Malfoy 
at Madam Malkins: 

"'Better Hufflepuff than Slytherin,' said Hagrid darkly. 'There's not a 
single witch or wizard who went bad who wasn't in Slytherin. You-Know-Who was 
one.'" 

And Hagrid would know :)
