Colin is not to be trusted, imho. Perhaps this comparison is a bit 
extreme, but his fascination with Harry reminds me of Mark David 
Chapman's obsession with John Lennon, and we all know how that ended. 

Because Colin has access and proximity to Harry's daily life, he 
(Colin) could be of great use to Voldemort; and being muggle-born 
would make him all the more "disposable" when his services were no 
longer needed.
