They were friends with Dumbledore, who knew about the prophecy, and 
apparently they trusted him. He could tell them to hide because they 
were in danger because of Voldemort, but he didn't need necessarily 
to tell them the whole truth. Voldemort was dangerous and they had a 
baby who needed protection, like every baby does: Harry was their 
weak point and it was enough to go into hiding. Of course, that's 
only a point of view.
