I, too, believe it is more than just kindness at work here. I think it's
very simple: Dumbledore believes (correctly in my opinion) that if Trelawney
leaves Hogwarts she will be in danger of capture, torture and/or death from
Voldemort and the Death Eaters. They'd be likely to give her the same
treatment they gave the Longbottoms, thinking she could tell them what they
wanted to know -- in this case, the words of the prophecy. (Of course,
they'd be wrong, just as they were with the Longbottoms, but that wouldn't
help her any more than it did them.)
