The QQQ version of the interview is almost certainly copied verbatim
from the Scholastic version, so an error in one would logically be
duplicated in the other. In the actual chat, Rowling was telling
someone what to type, and it is almost 100% certain that this person
simply misheard and mistyped her response. The way the question is
answered doesn't suggest anything unusual being said, and believe
me, that would definitely have been something unusual. That
interview was in 2000, just before Goblet of Fire came out, so the
characters were well known. If she'd actually dropped a name like
that, there would be a huge reaction.

In fact, I remember clearly when that interview happened, and we on
this list went over the transcripts with a fine-tooth comb. Some of
our list members were even present at the chat, as I recall. If she
had really said John, we'd have been all over it.
