I've been thinking about Luna Lovegood and her rather fanciful
theories about the world. I don't think that the crumple-horned
snorkack and friends are real, although it would be fun just to
see Hermione's reaction. Rather, I like the idea that Luna is
reacting to her mother's death. As a way of dealing with the grief,
she retreats into a fantasy world of heliopaths and blibbering
humdingers.

I think it's intriguing that JKR mentioned Luna and Hermione
being opposites, because I think they each have something to
learn from the other. Maybe by the end of the series, Luna will
teach Hermione not to be so naive about SPEW, and Hermione
will teach Luna to look at the world more rationally.
