Perhaps Luna and Hermione aren't so much polar opposites as they are
different sides of the same coin. 

I think we are seeing the difference between Knowledge and Wisdom.
Luna's knowledge is completely corrupted and unrealistic, however, her
wisdom seem clean and pure. Hermione on the other hand has impeccable
knowledge but is lacking in the quality of her wisdom.

Just a thought.
