I agree that he would have wanted to stay close to keep an eye on
his school and Harry, and there doesn't seem to be anything out
there to disprove that DD could be a metamorphmagus. But there is
another way he could have stayed in the area, if not at the school.
If Aberforth is indeed DD's brother, as many people suspect, it
would seem an ideal solution for DD to go hang out at the Hog's
Head. In fact, in Chapter 32, Out of the Fire (Am. ed., pg. 748),
while Hermione is tearfully explaining that they had tried to
contact DD at the Leaky Cauldron, the Three Broomsticks, and even
the Hog's Head, Dolores angrily cuts her off shouting, "Idiot girl,
Dumbledore won't be sitting in a pub when the whole Ministry's
looking for him!" (Sorry about that long sentence!) After reading
that, I never doubted that that was exactly what DD was doing.
