Harry is well aware of the dangers involved.  He says "If I get caught before 
I can get to the Stone, well, I'll have to go back to the Dursleys and wait 
for Voldemort to
find me there."  Keyword is "before".  Any number of professors could catch 
him before he could get to the stone and have him expelled. The fact that he is 
cogizant of the danger of being killed in the process is revealed in the next 
line "its only dying a bit later than I would have done." If he didn't think 
that he could be killed in the effort then why say that being expelled would 
only delay his death?. In fact it seems more like he expects to die rather than 
not considering it a possibilty.
