As it were for Merlin's teacher (or scribe - depending of which version
of the Arthurian legendarium you choose).

That makes one certain male named Blaise with a strong connection to
the British magical community, and one famous male named Blaise (Pascal).

I have heard (in this very connection) of women called Blaise, but I
still can't imagine it as a female name - there was never any doubt in
my mind (I wonder how much this is influenced by Modesty Blaise ;-)
