The silver sovereign was introduced by Henry VII ("the Tydder," for
Sylvia's benefit) in 1483 to establish his "sovereignty." His claim to
the crown was quite shaky and he used any means possible to strengthen
it, from marrying a Yorkist wife to naming his first son Arthur and
arranging to have him born at "Camelot" (Winchester). He introduced
the first gold sovereign in 1489.
