Bon nuit, Iris! I'm glad someone remembers that play;-). There's also 
a French 17th century novel, written by Alain-René Lesage, 
called "Gil Blas de Santillana" (or "de Santullano") where Victor 
Hugo may have taken the story.

Yes, that's true. You wrote a nice research about the name. I'll just 
add my two knuts:  

Blaise was the name of the priest who saved Merlin's mother from the 
devil, and the one who educated him as a youngster. Later on, he was 
his historician, as Merlin visited him regularly to tell him his 
adventures. Thus, it is a magic and appropiate name, don't you think 
so?

And maybe he's really good at Arithmancy ;-)
