Ooo...Oooo! ::raising her hand high in the air like Hermione:: Can I raise
a point? I don't think it's really *evidence* per se, but it's something
that I just thought of while reading through this thread.

It's common knowledge that it's a "creature" that's doing the petrifictions,
right? Okay...I guess the first thing that I would do is to go through a
handy-dandy copy of "Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them" and see what
kind of creature attacks/kills by petrification. I've got one right here
and unless there are a lot more beasts in the Potterverse than what is
actually listed in this book, then there isn't a whole lot to look through.

Well, you don't get very far before you hit "B" and find "Basilisk". Hey!
It kills by petrification. Hey! It happens to be a giant snake. Hey!
Didn't Salazar dig on snakes? It makes sense to me that it would be rather
easy to figure out that the creature in the Chamber was a Basilisk...but
then again the characters in these books sometimes surprise me at how slow
they can be.

-Gail B...trying to prove to herself that she can do more than just rhyme
two words together :)>
