I reply:
You're right. Drawing their wands might have done the trick but lets
think back to ALL the abuse that HRH have put up with at the hands of
Malfoy. Others have listed them lately, so I won't. And within a
week or two before this, Harry had watched a fellow student die,
watched all these nasty kids parents gather around LV to do more
evil, fought LV and watched the leader of the MoM deny that LV has
returned. Ron and Hermione have also heard these stores and
obeserved the troops gather for battle. You can't deny that emotions
are very, very high.

Therefore, your suggestion that they just draw their wands and
wait, I feel is almost against human nature. Malfoy. Crabbe and
Goyle were begging for a fight. They hexes that they threw in no way
were inteded to do real damage or hurt. They didn't mean to knock
them out. They probably would have been hexed in return like the
previous incident with Hermione's teeth. It was just the combination
of the 3 along with the unexpected ones from the twins on the side in
the hallway that caused the damage.

I do agree that the treatment of the knocked out and maybe injured
evil trio is a bit callous. But isn' there some sort of war malady
where normal caring individuals become shell shocked and immune due
to what they have been through from the enemy. Maybe that's the
case?
