I'm not suppose to say this but I agree with Heidi Tandy, the other
person who responded to this post.
This subject has come up before but it is usually related to us trying
to calculate or justify the number of students in the school by
relating it to the number of teachers and available classes. I have
alway been of the belief, as is Heidi, that 6th and 7th are on a
different much more flexible schedule.
Take Apparation Class for example, you can't apparate inside Hogwarts
grounds, so that means the students must leave Hogwarts to practice.
This would require some additional transportation time to get to
Hogsmeade or where ever the class was held. So it certainly couldn't
be fit into a standard class schedule, and with 'travel' time, it
would probably be a stretch for a double class. So, it could occur
after dinner or start at 8:00AM.
Don't forget that Astronomy Class is at midnight, so that is an
addtional class outside the normal schedule.
Also, we only see the school from Harry point of view, we don't know
that Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw don't have 8AM classes, or 3PM or 4PM
classes.
>From Harry's perspective the class schedule appears to be 9AM class,
10AM class, lunch, 1PM class, 2PM class. Now all we have to do is
decide if the classes are 45 minutes in-class with 15 minute between
classes. Remember they have to walk up the long sloping lawns to get
from Herbology or Care of Magical Creatures to get back to the castle;
that probably takes a while.
The alternate is full 1 hours classes with 15 minutes between class;
that throws the scheduling off slightly because the classes wouldn't
necessarily start on the hour or on the half-hour. Regardless, there
is still enough time for at least one more class in the morning and
one or possible two in the afternoon, and we don't know for a fact
that some students don't have a 7PM class. The point being, as
mentioned before, that we only see the Gryffindor schedule for Harry's
class, we don't see all the classes for the other 3 houses, and we
don't see the class schedule for the upper classmen in any of the houses.
I think it is safe to count on 7 to 9 class periods in a day-
8AM, 9AM, 10AM, possibly 11AM, (11AM to 1PM LUNCH), 1PM, 2PM, 3PM,
possible 4PM, (5PM to 7PM Dinner), and Astronomy at 12-midnight. Plus,
there are early evening periods open to upper classmen, so that could
add 2 or 3 more classes periods (5PM, 6PM, 7PM, 8PM). Notice that I
made lunch and dinner long enough that you could fit a class period in
that window of time and still have time to eat.
Conclusion: I don't think we can judge the schedule for the whole
school by what we see through Harry's eyes.
Just a few thoughts.
