Why Petrification?

Sorry this is so short, but I have to leave in like ten minutes and I
*had* to defend dear Pip.

Riddle, "..I have been waiting for you to appear since we arrived
here.  I knew you'd come."

How Riddle expected Harry to know how to come down there does not seem
to worry him.  He "knew" Harry would find a way to save his friend.
And Riddle was right.

Also, if Harry had not appeared, then Riddle would have a body to go
and *find* Harry.

Either way, Riddle's goals are met.


One last thing before I go...

Well petrifying someone's best friend does rather step up the search
