If I recall correctly, after Harry's escape Dumbledore has a confromtation 
with someone (almost certainly Fudge) where he states unequivocably that the 
child killed was the last of as pure-blooded a family as anyone could find. 
Or words to that effect. 

In fact, so far as we have seen, to this point in the series, for all the 
"rid the school of Muggle-borns" rhetoric which has been flung about, the two 
children who we've seen killed, or who only narrowly were snatched from 
death's door, have both been plebian purebloods. How long is it going to take 
before someone recognizes this and starts asking some questions?
