I agree with Heidi, I don't see Lucius as the loving father. As much as I hate to think this way, it seems to me that Lucius' sole reason for interaction with his son at all, which we don't see much of in canon, is to instill in him the hatred that he himself feels for the Potter line, along with the loyalty to the Dark Lord. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if Draco hasn't been longing for his father's affections. We haven't seen much of how Lucius interacts with his wife, but if there is even a smidgeon of affection in their relationship then that alone could lead Draco to yearn for his father's affections to go along with his approval.
