Er, couldn't it be because it was *Riddle* (or rather Riddlepossessed!
Ginny) who tore out the page, wrote on it, crumpled it up and pushed 
it into Hermione's hand? You don't think it's beyond Riddle to 
imitate Hermione's handwriting, do you? I find it much harder to 
believe that Hermione, of all people, would tear a page out of a 
library book and then *write* on it. How could you think it of her? 
And isn't it a bit suspicious that it could be eased out of her grip 
without tearing? Easy to explain if it was put there *after* she was 
petrified.

Riddle didn't need to worry that somebody else would follow the clue, 
since only a Parselmouth can enter the chamber.
