>>>2) Clueless-about-the-map!Dumbledore. Perhaps I have
pounded on this point too much. All the same... Please refer to
your copies of GoF, at the end of Chapter 35.

"I used the map I had taken from Harry Potter. The map that had
almost ruined everything."
"Map?" said Dumbledore quickly. "What map is this?"

Canonically, both Snape and Lupin saw the Marauder's Map. Yet,
no matter who is the agent, neither seems to have mentioned
that map to Professor Dumbledore. I cannot figure out why he
doesn't seem to know about it in this scene, and unless
someone comes up with a super-compelling argument, this
remains a substantial way to discredit both theories, again
IMHO.<<<

IMO, the only theory that *really* explains the Shrieking Shack is
Evil!Lupin, which also explains why Lupin didn't tell Dumbledore
about the Map. But I have been wondering the same thing about
Snape, and have only just come up with an explanation for it:
Snape never realized that the insulting piece of parchment and
the "certain Map" are the same.

Snape saw the activated map in Lupin's office. Seeing Lupin's
dot hurrying through the tunnel, Snape took only "one glance"
before chasing after Lupin. Without examining the parchment
itself or deciphering the "great, curly letters" that spell out the
Marauders' names, Snape would have no reason to connect the
Map with Harry's parchment. So when Snape said "I recognize it"
in chapter 25 of GoF, he meant he recognized the piece of
parchment that Harry had in ch. 14 of PoA, not the Map from
chapter 19.

IMO, Agent!Snape tells Dumbledore about Lupin's Map at the
end of PoA. Dumbledore doesn't learn that Harry had the Map
before Lupin did, or that Lupin has given it back to Harry, since
Snape doesn't know these things. If Agent!Snape then reports
that Madeye has confiscated a suspicious piece of parchment
from Potter, Dumbledore still has no reason to connect that with
the Map which Snape reported seeing in Lupin's office.

So, when Crouch says, "I used the map I had taken from Harry
Potter. The map that had almost ruined everything," Dumbledore
very naturally wants to know what map Crouch means, even
though he may already been told about Lupin's map.
