Nice essay, Dicentra - you've convinced me.  I don't know whether to 
be proud my posts were worth quoting, or embarrassed at them.

Anyway, the reason this isn't an offlist is that I'm pretty sure 
that in the past someone posted a similar reason for Ron's Yule Ball 
behaviour: it's not that he wants Hermione for himself, but that he 
sees Krum as threatening the existing friendship.  I felt it never 
got the attention it deserved, even if the consensus is ultimately 
with the R/H crush.

That would undermine the contrast you draw between the two 
occasions, of course.
