And I swore I would never get into this debate. So much for will power.
Okay, folks, so we can conclude that the oft-quoted interview is
interpretable. Perhaps we should conclude that *everything's*
interpretable.
As such, I will now interpret a few things in all these SHIP posts which
Jim happened to exemplify clearly in his most recent email.
"If the interviewer had wanted to know if Harry and Hermione would
ever have a date, he or she would have said so. JKR used the present
tense, 'to describe the platonic sense of H/Hr's friendship; and nobody
has ever accused JKR of tipping off much of the distant future (as in
more than a book ahead)."
Given. We're all smart enough to realize ambiguity is necessary for an
uber-famous, pantingly anticipated mystery writer.
"OTOH, we H/Hr's have never denied that there's something going on
between Ron and Hermione - *now*. Here's another JKR quote, from a
Yahooligans! interview in October, 2000:
'sammyohyeah asks: Is it just me, or was something going on between Ron
and Hermione during the last half of GOF? I love your books, btw, and two
of them I've read straight through cover to cover in under 24 hours.
jkrowling_bn: well done on the reading speed!
jkrowling_bn: yes, something's 'going on'...
jkrowling_bn: but Ron doesn't realise it yet...
jkrowling_bn: typical boy'
"I'm struck that it's RON who 'doesn't know it yet,' when we all thought
Ron was the one that *did* know it."
We are all also adults (give or take) that can recognize these things.
Ron is not, and JKR is writing him as such. Remember the whole 'she
completely missed the point!' line? (Don't have the book handy, but ya'll
know what I'm talking about) Flat denial.
"...and it's Harry that gives Hermione's (and Ron's) lives purpose they
would never have otherwise; and I believe Ron is carrying baggage that
would be fatal to a long-term R/H relationship."
Whoa, there! That's just *mean*! I won't even start about the Ron/baggage
thing, because I think it's a valid opinion and bboy_mn will probably
trounce it for me later anyways ;). But I *will* call you a big meanie
for totally denouncing *both* Ron & Hermione like that. Unless you
meant 'amongst other purpose that are equally as valid', in which case I
apologize for the razzing. Otherwise, it makes me sad to hear that folks
think heroes are the only one with purpose in their lives.
Has anybody else noticed that H/H folks tend to be enamoured with Harry,
and R/Hrm folks tend to be enamoured with Ron? Then there's the
contingency that's enamoured with Hermione, and they go both ways, as far
as I can discern.
"Not many people answered the first time I asked, but consider this: as
an R/H'er, what would you consider to be the vindication of the R/H POV?
An R/H romance in year 5, or another year, or a long term
partnership/marriage?"
I hazard a theory that R/Hrm folks are more fluffy romantics than H/H
folks. We just wanna see them bicker, make jokes, have a good time, get
on each other's nerves, support each other, support Harry, and live
happily ever after. I'm willing to admit this about myself. Bottom line:
we like what we've seen. It quite literally makes our hearts go pitter-
pat. We don't use words like 'vindication' because (well, in my silly
head it reminds me of the word 'vindictive' and that's never good) it's
all about the love. Yay for love. Love needs no vindication. It's just
there.
On a less fluffy level, however, I suggest that perhaps it comes down to
our opinions of JKR's complexity level with regards to this issue. In
my little heart of hearts, i hope JKR is intending on keeping this part
simple.
And I don't think she wants to share Harry.
