Maybe it's also to show us Hermione and Harry working alone
together, how they get along, and that something is
definitely missing in the balance with just the two of them.
And maybe to surprise us with Ron being what Harry misses
most, even after the rift, and not Hermione, even though it
could have been a logical choice.
She does help him a lot and is a good friend, but it doesn't
automatically mean that she's No.1 in Harry's heart.
Sometimes I almost feel a bit sorry for Harry, because many
readers *expect* him to ultimately choose Hermione as his
life partner. I have the feeling some reader might be
a bit angry with Harry if he doesn't, even after everything
that she's "done for him".
It sounds more like "paying his dues", even if his heart is
not in it. As if Hermione "deserves" to get Harry because she's
worked hard for it.
It makes me cringe a bit, because it makes it sound as if
Hermione is planning all this, and friendship doesn't play
much of a role.
