And it was probably wiped out (or Dumbledore would have known of it) -
but: 'I solemnly swear I'm up to no good' AND 'Mischief managed'.

I think that Peter Pettigrew _told_ them how it works. The twins 
caught the rat changing form and Pettigrew bribed them by telling 
them about the map and where to find it?
