Great question, Tom!

I don't know if I have much of an answer beyond what you're already 
said.

I have one hunch, though.  I feel fairly certain that Moody will 
prove pivotal and is not what we are all expecting.

Oh, and Snape will not die.  I'm certain of that, I think.  JKR said 
there was a death that would crucify her to write.  JKR could bump 
off Snape without breaking a sweat, so it can't be Our Dear Severus.
