>>Pippin proposes that it's setting up a time when relying on
Hermione's information isn't such a good thing. Or letting Harry
believe that Ron does have jealousy problems is a set-up for
something later.<<

>>Susanne:
Maybe it's also to show us Hermione and Harry working alone
together, how they get along, and that something is
definitely missing in the balance with just the two of them.

And maybe to surprise us with Ron being what Harry misses
most, even after the rift, and not Hermione, even though it
could have been a logical choice.

She does help him a lot and is a good friend, but it doesn't
automatically mean that she's No.1 in Harry's heart.<<

Taryn:
>>I think that's a very good point. I've always read Ron as Harry's
real and true /best/ friend. Not to say that Hermione isn't a
wonderful and extremely close friend as well, but Ron is really
Harry's best friend. I think it was most obvious to me in GoF,
during Ron and Harry's fight. We've seen Harry and Ron when they're
fighting with Hermione and not speaking. They have fun. They enjoy
each other's company. In GoF, Harry even /says/ that Hermione isn't
Ron. He doesn't enjoy himself nearly as much alone with her as she
does with Ron. Harry and Ron enjoy themselves more than Harry and
Hermione. Of course, the entire Trio is needed for complete balance,
but it is Ron that is Harry's second, his right-hand man.<<

Hermione knows that she isn't, both, Harry nor Ron's bestfriend.
I'm at work so I can't quote this properly, but in PoA when Harry
confronts Hermione about Crookshanks and Scabbers, she tells Harry
something close to her knowing that Harry would take his (Ron's)
side and that he always does. She's not stupid, of course.

Sometimes this makes me wonder if maybe she'll betray them, or
simply leave the group. And the latter could be interesting, she
leaves the group thinking it would be best, although she'd love to
stay. Yet she'll still help Harry unbeknownest to him and wind up
putting herself in a possible she cannot get out of her, or she
could be at the wrong place at the wrong time. Hermione's
intelligence could be her downfall.
