If it's supposed to be "a realistic possibility," then it's answered by the Sirius argument: If there's going to be a central character who is crucial to Harry and the plot in books 5-7, why make him a throwaway mention in 1, a red herring for most of 3, and someone who
doesn't appear in the flesh until the end of 3? (AKA the Figg
argument and the Neville argument.)>>>>>>>
Um. Sirius is not intended to be Harry's *love interest.* I think that's where the sticking point is for me with that particular line of reasoning. It's one thing to have a "good guy" turn out to be a villain (Scabbers- Pettigrew) or a "bad guy" turn into a good guy (Sirius, Snape). It's quite another to suddenly take a minor female character and turn her into the love object of the hero, if you haven't laid the foundation for that in some manner. And, I maintain that JKR has not set that foundation in place for H/G.
And, it's not that I think Harry should already be in love with her, as Megalynn asks. No, quite the opposite. The question though is why this character, Ginny, if she is to be Harry's love interest, doesn't figure into the books as a *character* in her own right much at all. She's very much in the background. I just don't buy that JKR is keeping her a "mystery" or as an "ace-in-the-hole." I guess I expect the Hero to hook up with the woman we're all rooting for down deep, the gal with spunk and character and ......I don't know.......everything that Hermione has and Ginny doesn't I guess. At this point, Harry barely notices Ginny, and he, Ron *and* Hermione (supposedly bosom buddies with Ginny according to some circles) actively exclude her from the Trio in GoF. She just doesn't figure in the big picture. I *know* and *love* Hermione. I don't know much about Ginny *at all.* So, that's *part* (though certainly by no means all) of what drives my shipping position.
I guess I just don't get how it can be *obvious* that Ginny is going to get Harry in the end........when JKR has done precious little to make the readers love and root for Ginny. How can I root for her, when I don't know who she is or *why* she'd be a good match for my beloved hero? ?????

There's loads of time. Heck, she's got almost 900 pages just in OP
to develop the character of Ginny or anyone else. (Wheeeee!)

OK, I'm not an H/G shipper. But if I *did* want to figure out how
JKR was going to get from where she is now to Harry and Ginny gazing
adoringly into each other's eyes in the last few chapters of the
series, I would say:
Because there are 500 other things going on in this seven-part novel
than the development of Harry's love life!

Very possible, but not by any means a certainty. Where all these
shippers get *their* certainty is a mystery to me, since the only
couples I can see that are obvious are the married ones and Hagrid
and Maxime. And, of course, Harry and Millicent. That one's a dead
cert.
