I don't see how Harry's protection could have anything to do with a 
life-debt.  Any debt incurred that night would've been owed by Harry 
to Lily, and would've therefore been geared toward benefitting 
Lily.  Instead, Harry gets the benefits and Lily is dead.  This is 
exactly the reverse of what a life-debt is supposed to achieve.

I agree there must  be some magical component involved -- Dumbledore 
has said so.  But I think that the magical effects are extremely 
indirect and unpredictable, and that they don't negate anybody's 
free will.
