Oh, gads, I wasn't even addressing the Ginny character issue.  I have 
no doubt that if it was she who sent it, she didn't intend to mortify 
Harry.  Save us from the good intentions of smitten eleven-year-
olds . . .  It was a hilariously miscalculated declaration of love--
unless it was Draco, or Lockhart himself, trying to humiliate Harry, 
as some theories have it.
