people who he could be protecting:

Neville Longbottom because he's "weak", but we all know there's more
going on then JK is letting on about Neville and his magical powers.

Ron Weasley because I find it so ironic that Scabbers/Pettigrew got
into his family of all the other Hogwart's student who have families
who work in the ministry. Who are those students anyhow? lol

and Hermione Granger, for the simple fact I don't know jack about
her family background, except they're dentist. I do hope we get
some information about her parents or at least have Harry and Ron
visit her.<<

To back my theory just a tad bit, I will quote something on
Hermione. It is after they go into the forest and where Draco states
that the DE are after Muggles like Hermione:

GoF Ch. 9: The Dark Mark, P. 125
"'Let's just keep moving, shall we?' said Ron, and Harry saw him
glance edgily at Hermione. Perhaps there was truth in what Malfoy
has said; perhaps Hermione *was* in more danger than they were."

Although all muggles are in danger of being attacked by DE's, this
one observation by Harry and Ron could be a foreshadowing. It could
be as I said before that Harry is unknowingly fighting off Voldemort
for someone else, and not just himself. Or it could mean that
Hermione may one day be in the hands of Voldemort and/or DE and Harry
and Ron will have to save her.

IIRC, Lucius Malfoy knows Hermione is a Muggle. He could get his
hands on her, one way or another, and deliver her to Voldemort. That
way Harry would have to save her and confront Voldemort again, which
is what Voldemort would definitely want.
