What makes you think "the Potters" had to die? Voldemort wanted to kill
Harry. We
know he would have spared Lily. He might have spared James, had James not
attacked
him. We don't how and why any other Potters died.

Maybe it's because Harry is the last heir of Gryffendor?? Dumbledore showed
Harry the sword (in CoS) that was engraved with Gryffendor's name and said
"only a true Gryffendor could've pulled that out of the hat!" I think Harry
is Gryffendor's heir, thus the arch-enemy of Voldemort. What I've never
understood is why people on these lists say Lily Potter must have bene a
Slytherin?? Is it because the Sorting Hat said Harry might do well in
Slytherin? I thought he had that "Slytherin influence" from having
Voldemort's powers in him (by way of the scar - Dumbledore said some of
Voldemort's powers transferred to Harry, like Parseltongue). I don't see
anywhere in canon that makes me think Lily was a Slytherin -- have I missed
something?
