Question about Death Eaters

Please, if you must send me a howler for a stupid question, be quick and as 
kind as possible about it.  I did read the FAQ's and tried to find a thread 
to follow, but to no avail.

So, do we know how the Death Eaters got their name, or why they are called 
thus? I know that they are Lord Voldemort's supporters, but what is their 
name in reference?  Is there any other historical or literary reference?  I 
imagine this has already been discussed, so could someone please point me in 
the  right direction?
