The tensions in the relationship between Draco and Lucius are seen in the dialogue that occurs between Lucius and the shopkeeper in the dark arts shop in Knockturn Alley. Lucius belittles Draco to the shopkeeper about his grades not meeting his expectations (It is the passage where Draco becomes interested in the mummified hand. The shopkeeper tries to point out it's surreptitious benefits, but Lucius waves him off saying that he hopes that his son will amount to more than a thief, however...if his grades don't improve etc.) Draco blames his problems on Hermione and Harry Potter.
This passage is similar to what caused the rift between Barty Crouch Sr. and Barty Crouch Jr. as described in Goblet of Fire. Jr. always felt that he never lived up to Dad's expectations. He sought affirmation from another mentor, Voldemort. Perhaps Draco will do the same.

There's no earthly way of knowing / Which direction we are going / There's no knowing where we're rowing / Or which way the river's flowing / Is it raining? / Is it snowing? / Is a hurricane a-blowing? / Not a speck of light is showing / So the danger must be growing / Are the fires of hell a-glowing? / Is the grisly reaper mowing? / Yes, the danger must be growing / 'Cause the rowers keep on rowing / And they're certainly not showing / Any signs that they are slowing!
