I have tried to read as many of these post as I could, just to make 
sure this hasn't already been brought out.

Now we all know that Rita over heard everything, and basicly saw it 
all also, but what I could not find out is, what is the punishment 
for her if Hermione told that Rita was an illegal animagus?
So, do you think it would be worth Rita's punishment to tell 
everything she knows? Do you think she will be in any trouble at 
all?
Why can't she make a "plea deal"? Where she tells the authorities 
that she not only know what animagus Sirius Black turns too, but 
where he is staying so she doesn't get in trouble?
Remember: (GoF; page 713 US) "Now I have work for each of you. 
Fudges attitude, though not unexpected, changes everything.Sirius, I 
need you to set off at once. You are to alert Remus Lupin, Arabella 
Figg, Mundungus Fletcher - the old crowd. Lie low at Lupins for a

So, she can run to "the authorities", make a "deal", she is no 
longer an "illegal animagus", she gets Dumbledore in major trouble, 
has not only Sirius but Lupin in Prison, and all is well in Rita  
world.
Plus, how many more stories can she write? About Hagrid going back 
to the giants at Dumbledores request, That Snape IS a DE, and the 
Minister of Magic knows it, and he (Snape, a DE) is TEACHING the 
children at Hogwarts. 
So many stories, so little time.............
