I can buy the sinking self-worth, low self-esteem, the tendency to
leap before he looks, the sarcasm, and the resentment of his family's
financial status, but I don't buy the jealousy.  

Can you (or anyone else) build a case for it?  REAL jealousy?  Not
wistful thinking and wishing things were different, but soul-eating,
deadly sin jealousy?
