And in Diagon Alley, after Harry has just bought his school robes
and met Draco for the first time, Hagrid says:
"Anyway, what does he know about it, some o' the best I ever saw
were the only ones with magic in 'em in a long line o' Muggles --
look at yer mum! Look what she had fer a sister!"
Canon seems to indicate, at least up to this point, that Lilly came
from a Muggle family. Who knows what her distant relations are,
though. As Ron points out in CS, there was a great deal of
intermarriage between wizards and muggles, and no one can be
completely sure how "pureblood" their ancestry is. It might be
revealed that all the Muggle-borns have wizarding blood back there
somewhere, and that all the wizards likewise have muggle parentage
in their family trees. More than likely Lilly's ancestry will play
just as much an important part in Harry's destiny as the Potters,
even if they turn out to be "just" Muggles.
