What is Godric's Hollow? (was: Godric Hollow/Heartless Dursleys)

Andrea's response reminded me of a question I had: Is Godric's Hollow the 
name of the home, or the city?  IIRC, I don't think we have enough 
information in canon to answer this, but someone on this list may surprise 
me.  :-)  A lot of people use the Potters' residence in Godric's Hollow the 
city as evidence for Gryffindor's Heir!Harry.  However, is it possible that 
since both James and Lily were in Gryffindor, they thought that might be a 
clever name for their home?  It does have a nice ring to it, after all.

I've never really understood why people name their houses/estates, or other 
possessions, for that matter.  :-)  (At first I was going to blame it on 
being American, but then I remembered that some Americans, mostly affluent, 
do in fact name their estates.)
