Here is an additional link to an interview where future death are
mentioned.
http://radio.cbc.ca/programs/thismorning/sites/books/rowling_001023.html
Quoted in part:
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Rogers:
I do hear that in the fifth volume, that's about to come out, that
Harry is going to have to deal with death.
Rowling:
Harry has already dealt with death, .... ... death is a central theme
of the books. ... fair to say that in book five he has to examine
exactly what death means, in even closer ways. ...
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
'Examine death in closer ways' (paraphrased) can be interpreted in
lots of different ways. No one needs to die for death to be examined
in closer ways. Since I've heard we find out more about why some
people become ghost, the death could be Moaning Myrtle's death. Of
course, I have the fondest hope that the Trio will find a way to set
Myrtle free from her anguish and let her cross over to her eternal rest.
I do vaguely remember reading a 'fan' + 'death' quote, but perhaps
I've heard it so many times that I've come to believe it. Also, there
seems to be a lot of confusion around JKR's references to the story in
general and her references specifically to the next book (5). That
only adds to the confusion.
Even if we accept 'death of a fan' and 'hard to write', we need to
remember that when death was predicted in book 4, we went through this
same process of predicting the death of every character from the most
insignificant to the most prominent, and we were way off the mark in
every case. Let's also remember that Rowling said in so many words
that Cedric's death was 'hard to write', she said she cried when she
wrote it.
So 'death of a fan' is pretty much anyone who isn't a Slytherin and
'hard to write' will be any death no matter who's it is.
You know JKR does this just to make us nuts. She drop vague hints and
misleading clues so that us thoroughly obsessed fan will be
boarderline hysterical by the time the next book comes out.
Personally, I believe there will be the death of a very significant
character before the end. The most likely is Dumbledore, which is a
literary standard. The master dies and the student must carry on with
nothing but what the master taught him and the master's spirit to
guide him. Hagrid is also a possibility; as are the Creevy brothers.
But I'm having a real hard time accepting the death of the 3 main
characters unless at the very end one dies an extremely heroic death.
Taking a page for LoR (of sorts), I wouldn't mind seeing dear sweet
Neville jump in at the last moment and be the one to slay Voldemort.
Just a few thoughts.
