Technically, though, the AK wasn't unsuccessful.  It still caused harm, at the very least Harry was left with a cut.  If even a shadow of Wormtail's new hand can come out of the wand, shouldn't *something* have come out for the AK?  A lightning bolt shape, a flash of light, a scream from Voldemort being ripped from his body, *something.*  Somehow it just doesn't figure, I've been through that passage so many times, I can't quite put my finger on it, but the feeling that nothing was there when something should have been just hangs on.  But what does it mean?  Was someone else there?  Was another wand used?  I've tried all variations, but nothing quite fits.  <sigh>  115 days.  :)
