This is closest to my theory, actually. Remember when the Hat was first
created, the Founders were all still alive and at the school. It might've
been a little...odd for the students to hear them debating as they poked
around in the kid's head, and then be expected to go have *class* with
them. ;) Not to mention they probably would argue quite a bit about where
certain students belong, but that's the kind of argument that usually
doesn't go on in front of the kid. They want to present a united front,
so to speak. So I propose the idea of a "Hat voice" that serves that
purpose, letting them debate behind the scenes without letting the kids in
on it. The individual Founders would probably be ABLE to speak if they
chose to, but for the Sorting they just let the Hat voice take over.
[plug]And incidentally, while I usually hate people pimping their fanfic
on this list, I DID write a fic about this a few months back that probably
explains the whole idea better than I can. *g* It's called "The Thinking
Cap" and is on FictionAlley and Sugar Quill under the name Andrea13.

Ooh. I hadn't thought of that, but I like this idea. Hrm. But the
enchantment would've had to then transfer the "brains" to the Hat itself
regardless of the object, or there wouldn't be a Gryffindor presence in
the Hat anymore. (The sword is on display in Dumbledore's office now,
IIRC.)

I was very impressed with that too. *I* was getting confused about it!
